What Chemicals to Avoid

Luckily, there are only a few chemicals in home cleaning products that you have to avoid while pregnant. This means that you have to be wary of the products that you are getting as they may affect your baby’s growth or cause other complications. Expecting mommies are highly vulnerable and delicate and safety is a must. Most home cleaning products are very toxic and might cause allergic reactions that can possibly affect the baby and the mother. In order to get rid of these possibilities, watch out for these chemicals:

Triclosan

Home cleaning products that have anti-bacterial properties usually contain this chemical. It is a well-known endocrine disruptor and can impact the baby’s physical growth.

Phthalates

These are usually used in making products smell better. However, when phthalates interact with the hormones in the mother’s body, it can cause extreme birth defects in unborn children.

Glycol Eaters

Most glass cleaners and oven cleaners contain glycol ethers. Accidental intake of these substances can greatly affect fertility and reduce cognitive development of the child in the womb.

How Should I Protect Myself?

Even when there are only a few chemicals that you have to avoid, you should still take some steps in order to ensure your baby’s safety. Here are some safety precautions to take while cleaning one’s home:

Read the packaging carefully.

Most products that contain harmful chemicals have warnings especially those that may affect pregnant women and those that could trigger allergies. Look out for that!

Check and recheck labels.

You can never be too sure with warnings, so it is still best to go over the contents of the products before using them. This would help you find the best product for you to use in cleaning your home and ensuring your baby’s safety.

Look for organic home cleaning products.

Organic products do not pose as much harm as those that are chemical-based. Most types of cleaning products have organic versions that you can use, and they do the job just as well.

Wear gloves.

Wearing gloves will not only remove the hazard of skin reactions but will prevent you from transferring products to your mouth and eye when you unknowingly touch them afterwards.

Wear a mask.

Home cleaning products are very toxic and emit scents that may be too strong for the mother. While not every product entails birth defects, in can still trigger nausea and vomiting for mommies. Masks help lessen or filter the toxic scents that you may inhale. It can also be used to cover your face from splashes and lessening the threat of skin irritation.

Open a window.

Leaving a window open while cleaning is a good way of letting the fumes out of your home and not stuck inside the house. With an open window, air circulates and is not left there for you to smell.

Nausea? What Can I Do?

It is very common for pregnant women to have a very heightened sense of smell. This, in turn, could trigger nausea, headache, and vomiting and let me tell you, there is no fun in that. While cleaning the house, most of the products that you use have very strong scents that could trigger nausea or give you a headache that will surely ruin your day. Here’s what you can do to avoid it:

Pick unscented products. (We will recommend unscented products in the last section of this article.)

The market offers a wide array of home cleaning products and these include unscented ones. Picking unscented products gives you the leverage of not having to deal with strong scents yet still be able to clean your home. It’s hitting two birds with one stone!

Find your preferred scent.

Aside from having unscented products, there are different scents like lemon, tea tree, rose, and many more that are readily available in the market. All you have to do is find one that does not trigger your nausea or headache and you are good to go.

Wear a mask.

If you do not want to go through the hassle of finding a new product that works for you, you can always just wear a mask. Sure, it does not get rid of the scent totally, but it is lessened by a great deal and you will also have something to cover your face from splashes.

Use the pregnancy card.

Of course, as an expecting mom, you can just say that you cannot do the job because you do not feel well. People will understand and do the job for you. This is one of the few perks of being pregnant!
